During the middle ages gemstones including garnets were very popular. They came from the middle and far east. Garnets were thought to have medical properties, including strengthening the heart and also as love tokens. It is not unusual to find re-used gemstones from earlier periods, including the Roman Empire and already antiquities. This stone looks to be such an example.
